While Bitcoin prices steadily grow and the cryptocurrency becomes more widely used, the currency’s creator continues to remain a mystery.
Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used for the person or the group of people who are responsible for inventing Bitcoin and developing the blockchain technology that the cryptocurrency relies on.
Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin to the internet in 2008, when he published a paper online that provided readers with an in-depth description of the digital currency. He then launched the first Bitcoin software in early 2009 and mined the first Bitcoins on January 3rd.
He remained involved in the Bitcoin community until his mysterious disappearance from the community in 2010 when he gave the Bitcoin network alert key and source code repository to the software developer Gavin Andresen and provided Bitcoin domains to other well-known community members.
Although several people have claimed to be Nakamoto or have been suspected by the Bitcoin community, there is no solid evidence that identifies any one person to be Nakamoto.
Some of the people who have been suspected to be the creator of Bitcoin include:
Craig Stephen Wright
Wright is a businessman and computer scientist from Australia. In 2015, Wright was accused of being Satoshi Nakamoto by the website Gizmodo and the magazine Wired. Proof of being Nakamoto was offered by Wright, but the proof has since been disputed by members of the Bitcoin community. Wright has since given up on backing his claims.
Dorian Nakamoto is a physicist who had previously worked as a system engineer and computer engineer for secret defense projects and finance companies. He was accused based on his vast knowledge on technology and his libertarian viewpoint. Despite several interviews and evidence suggested by journalists, Nakamoto denies being the creator of Bitcoin.
Nick Szabo is another computer scientist who has been linked to the invention of Bitcoin. Szabo had been interested in cryptography and cryptocurrency far before Bitcoin was invented and even developed his own unused cryptocurrency known as Bit Gold, which is very similar to Bitcoin. Although some people still believe that Szabo is Nakamoto, no evidence exists and Szabo denies the claims.
Finney is a developer who, much like Szabo, was extremely interested in cryptography and cryptocurrency. He was one of the first people to use Bitcoin and make changes on the Bitcoin software. Finney worked closely with Nakamoto and has been accused of actually being the inventor himself. However, doubt still remains even though Finney has denied being Nakamoto.
Although several people have been suspected of being the real Satoshi Nakamoto, the hunt for the Bitcoin inventor continues.
